What SEO costs in India in 2026 — audits, freelancers, agencies, retainers

By Vishal · Published 13 October 2026

SEO in India costs ₹15,000–₹40,000 a month for small-business work, ₹40,000–₹1,00,000 for growth-stage companies, and ₹1,00,000 and up for enterprise, based on published agency pricing in 2026. Freelancers charge ₹15,000–₹40,000 a month. A one-time audit runs ₹3,000–₹50,000 depending on who does it. The useful question is not the price but what is delivered per month for it.

The 2026 ranges, from published pricing

These are compiled from agency pricing pages and guides published in India in 2026, not from quotes we invented. Where an agency's page contradicts itself (it happens often), we took the package cards over the marketing copy.

Growth / mid-size retainer₹40,000–₹1,00,000D2C, SaaS, multi-service firms with real search demandWho is on the account — a senior operator or juniors?
Enterprise / multi-location₹1,00,000–₹5,00,000+Marketplaces, national brands, large cataloguesReporting theatre; insist on business metrics, not rank counts
GEO / AI-search add-on₹25,000–₹1,50,000 (often bundled)Brands whose buyers research in ChatGPT or AI OverviewsClaims without measurement; ask for a citation-share baseline
One-time audit₹3,000–₹50,000 one-offAnyone before hiring, after a traffic drop, or doing it in-house"Free" audits are sales decks

For calibration: Google Ads bids in India for commercial SEO terms themselves now run ₹125–₹375 per click for "seo agency bangalore" and ₹23–₹177 for "seo cost india" (Keyword Planner, October 2026). That is what agencies pay to acquire you, and it is a floor on what your organic clicks are worth to them.

What each tier should include

A price is only meaningful against a deliverables list. The minimum you should see in writing, by tier:

  • Under ₹40,000/month — a technical fix list actioned (not just reported), 2–4 new or refreshed pages a month written against a brief, on-page optimisation of your money pages, Search Console monitoring, a monthly report that shows clicks and leads, not just rankings.
  • ₹40,000–₹1,00,000 — everything above plus a content calendar built from keyword clusters, 4–8 pages a month, a link-earning programme (digital PR, expert sourcing, resource outreach — not bought links), conversion tracking, quarterly strategy review, and now a GEO baseline.
  • Over ₹1,00,000 — a named senior lead, programmatic or large-catalogue SEO, international or multi-location handling, developer time for Core Web Vitals, original research or tools as linkable assets, and reporting tied to revenue.

If a quote does not say how many pages and how many earned links per month, it is not a quote yet.

Audit pricing, specifically

Agencies list one-time audits at ₹10,000–₹50,000, and a surprising number of pricing pages contradict themselves (one we checked advertises ₹1,999 in the footer and ₹10,000–₹50,000 in the body). Many offer the audit free. The economics explain why: a free audit that finds twenty problems justifies a ₹40,000 retainer, so the audit is written to sell.

Our view, and our price: an audit should be an inspection with a fixed scope and a fixed price, from someone who will not lose a sale if the answer is "your site is fine, spend the money on content". seoclock's 60-point audit is ₹2,999, or ₹5,999 with AI-search visibility, delivered in 48 hours, with the method and a sample published. Agencies that sell honest audits exist too; the checklist lets you compare any of them against the same 60 items.

Fair quote or inflated? Six questions

  1. What exactly ships each month? Pages, links, fixes — numbers, not adjectives.
  2. Who does the work? Ask for the name and background of the person on your account, not the founder on the sales call.
  3. How are links earned? If the answer involves "our network of sites" or a price per link, walk away; Google's spam policies and the 2026 updates have been unkind to it.
  4. What does the report measure? Clicks, leads, revenue from organic. A report of "keywords in top 100" is not a report.
  5. What is the exit? Month-to-month after an initial three months is fair; twelve-month locks are not.
  6. What happens to AI search? A 2026 proposal with no plan to measure AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT citations is a 2022 proposal.

What GEO adds to the bill

Indian agencies started selling GEO/AEO packages in 2025–26 at ₹25,000–₹1,50,000 a month, usually bundled with SEO. Some of it is real work — restructuring pages so engines quote them, building entity signals, earning mentions. Some is relabelled SEO. The test is measurement: a serious GEO proposal starts with your current citation share across the engines and reports it monthly. If nobody can tell you the baseline, there is nothing to improve against. Our GEO audit is that baseline; the free AI visibility check is the do-it-yourself version.

Deciding what to spend

Work backwards from the value of a customer. If a lead is worth ₹5,000 and organic could reasonably bring 20 a month in a year, a ₹40,000 retainer that gets there pays for itself 2.5 times over; if a lead is worth ₹300, no retainer makes sense and a one-time audit plus in-house content is the right spend. Two numbers decide it: your demand (search volume for commercial terms in your category — a Keyword Planner export, or ask us) and your lead value. Everything else is negotiation.

The honest first step for most businesses is the cheapest one: a fixed-price audit, read it, and then decide whether to hire, to do it yourself, or to do nothing.

Questions people ask

How much does SEO cost per month in India?

In 2026, published agency pricing clusters at ₹15,000–₹40,000 a month for small-business and local SEO, ₹40,000–₹1,00,000 for growth-stage companies, and ₹1,00,000–₹5,00,000+ for enterprise or multi-location work. Freelancers typically charge ₹15,000–₹40,000 a month. One-time audits are quoted at ₹10,000–₹50,000 by agencies; seoclock charges ₹2,999–₹5,999.

Is SEO worth it for a small business in India?

When the people you sell to search for what you sell, yes — organic clicks are the cheapest sustained traffic a business can get, and in India Google Ads bids for commercial terms now run ₹20–₹375 a click. It is not worth it if your demand is tiny or you cannot wait four to six months; an audit tells you which case you are in before you spend.

Why do SEO prices vary so much?

Three things: how much content and link work is actually included, who does it (a senior operator or a junior following a checklist), and whether the price is for a plan or for outcomes. Ask for the deliverables per month in writing; two retainers at ₹40,000 can differ by a factor of five in work done.

Should I pay for an audit or get a free one?

A free audit from an agency is a sales document; it will find problems that justify their retainer. A paid, fixed-price audit from someone not pitching a retainer gives you an independent baseline you can hold any vendor to. Buy the audit, then shop.
